Abbey Notre-Dame D'Ourscamp

Reconstruction of an abbey wing

Location
Chiry-Ourscamp

After the bombing of the First World War, a wing of the abbey suffered considerable damage. Currently, the restauration of this wing is being reviewed, with the aim of adding a hotel function dedicated to spiritual retreats. More than a restoration and rehabilitation operation, this project combines valuable social and environmental objectives for the realisation of this unique project in France, within the framework of the historical monuments and the restoration plan.

In this project, Bopro guides the project owner and the project manager in the integration of technical and architectural solutions linked to sustainable development. These solutions will make it possible to improve the energy efficiency of the site, to reduce water consumption, to re-use the materials present on site and to control the impact during the exploitation phase. In addition, Bopro made an overview of preselected materials in order to find alternatives with a low carbon impact: materials of biological origin, locally produced, low carbon, etc. For the construction phase, Bopro drew up an ecological site charter to encourage companies to integrate this environment-friendly approach in their construction.

History

Notre-Dame d’Ourscamp Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey listed as a historical monument. It is located in the town of Chiry-Ourscamp (France) on the site of an ancient oratory founded by Saint-Eloi in 641. The oratory was transformed into an abbey by Saint Bernard in 1129 at the request of Simon de Vermandois, bishop of Noyon and nephew of the French king Louis VI le Gros. It became one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in northern France.

Numbers

The reconstruction, expected to last 30 months, will be carried out by the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus and Mary under the direction of Alice Capron-Valat, heritage architect. With a value of around €4 million (phase 1), the operation will receive a credit of €900.000 under the rehabilitation plan.

Program

The program includes a total area of 1,300 m², spread over four floors. The project involves the construction of a winter chapel that can accommodate 115 people with various attached spaces such as meeting rooms, sacristy,… and 17 halls that offer space to 87 persons in total.
