“De Faar” is the first of four residential projects of property development ‘De Nieuwe Dokken’, a brand-new urban district along the Schipperskaai in Ghent. With its 45 flats, offices, shops, catering areas, recreational facilities and 2 underground parking levels, this multifunctional building, characterised by its bright red façade cladding, profiles itself as a sustainable urban district for the future, especially given its focus on the in-situ production of heating and electricity via the conversion of local waste streams into energy by means of a ZAWENT installation (Zero Wastewater with Energy and Nutrient Recovery).
The ‘green’ aspect also received the attention it needed. A number of sustainable tree species, such as Pine, Maple and Wych Elm, together with a rich diversity of shrubs, plants and ornamental grasses on the large roof gardens give the Faar’s green look even more expression.
Bopro as BREEAM advisor and Assessor has provided sustainability advice and managed the certification process with the final result a BREEAM Excellent score for the residential part. The commercial part is yet to be certified.
